About San Diego
A Brief History
San Diego was named in 1602 by Sebastian Vizcaino who sailed there and surveyed the harbor near Mission Bay and Point Loma. He named it for a Spanish born Catholic Saint, Didacus, more commonly known as San Diego. The city really got off to a start though in 1769. It is then that the Fort Presidio of San Diego was established by Gaspar de Portolà. The following year friars built a mission and San Diego was on it's way to becoming a city. By 1850 the city was incorporated as part of the United States, and the county seat for the newly established San Diego County, a distinction it still holds today.
